Barbara Stewart: danced on stage in pre-war England at Shepherds Bush and Hackney Empires when she was just 14 years old. Pantomimes, Principal Dancer and even dancing at the famous London Palladium all followed before she was 16 years of age and World War II was declared whereon she danced through the Blitz.  In 1943 Barbara was called up in ENSA and her wartime experiences in the U.K., Africa, Italy, Holland, Belgium and Germany mostly on makeshift stages; with the dancers delivered from the back of the truck; often with no more than a curtain for a dressing room with the enemy just a few short miles away give a fascinating read. Then came the post-war years, trying to make a success of civilian life in a number of jobs with triumph and tragedy through to when she started appearing as an 'Extra' on a multitude of TV shows.  Barbara always wanted to write a book of her experiences and at the age of 83 she achieved that ambition with:

Joe Brearley BA  was born in Yorkshire in 1909, the son of middle class parents.   He won a scholarship to Cambridge, graduating with a B.A. in English.  Armed with his degree he became a teacher.  His love of the theatre inspired such greats as Harold Pinter and Henry Woolf.   Pre-war he had travelled in Germany and his reflections of German life bring an understanding of how the situations developed in the years prior to the Second World War.
On being called to join the Armed Forces in 1941, Joe was being sent to Singapore when his ship was torpedoed and he was sent instead to the Middle East.
He returned to teaching after the war and picked up a job teaching English in a German School where he met and worked with 'soul-mates' who challenged the basic tenants of life he had struggled to come to terms with for many years.  His letters reveal life as it was for Joe and have been complied into two books to date by GL Watkins.

Some of our Evacuee Authors – 60 years on!
In 1939 – in fear of a blitzkrieg from the German Air force - 1,800,000 children were moved away from London and South Eastern England, away from their parents to ‘safety’. Many had never left the streets in which they were born or ever been parted from their parents and were taken away to places their parents had never visited or even heard about.
The charm and resilience of the evacuee children who contributed to this book will fill your soul – Any stress you feel will evaporate with every page. This book is dedicated to the ‘evacuees’ and the families that gave them succour.

                                        Alfred Dodd

                                        Picture
Alfred Dodd was born of a Jewish mother in an area then well-known for its mixed population of mainly Christian and descendants of Eastern European Jewish immigrants.  Through his father’s infidelity he was raised in a Christian home and was often involved in the conflict that was present between the different religious and ethical groups who lived in the East-End of London.  His mother’s new partner was operating outside the law.  Young Alfie suffered the consequences of being taken into care and loosing the love and security every lad needs as they grow to maturity.  Sadly, Alfie was not able to build on his civil engineering career through ill-health and died at the age of 54. This is Alfie’s story and his book gives a very vivid and accurate view of how life was in the East-End of London in the post-war years of 1945–1960.

                                        Ryan Keith

                                        Picture
One-time scooter Mod, Ryan Keith looked towards retirement as an opportunity to do stuff that he had previously had no time to fit in, due to work and other commitments. Since he still had a Vespa affectionately known as Ernest in the garage, and had never attempted a long run since the time his throttle cable snapped on the way to Margate back in 1964, he began to line up possible adventures. For a variety of reasons, the North of Ireland came out tops. This book is the result, and tells how he got on. A beautiful written book full of the interesting Characters he met and his reflections on the divisions of today and the days of the Spanish Armada.
